How to choose the best facial scrub for your skin

The importance of exfoliating the face cannot be stressed enough. Whether you have oily, dry or combination skin, a facial scrub can help remove dead cells from the surface which will unblock pores and leave your skin looking more radiant and healthy overall.

Let’s take a look at three popular exfoliation methods:

  1. Exfoliation with scrubs

A facial scrub is a solid product containing fine particles that are used to rub against the skin vigorously in order to physically get rid of dirt and dead cells from the outermost layers. There are two types of scrubs: those made up mainly of salt granules (in manual or electronic form) and those that use beads made from natural ingredients like apricots and coffee. 1. Exfoliation with peels and microdermabrasion

Peels are often used by professionals in clinics. The active ingredients exfoliate the dead cells from your skin, exposing a layer of youthful new skin underneath, plumpened and ready for facial treatments and moisturizing. Peels can be applied at different levels (beginner, standard or advanced), depending on how much you want to get rid of problematic skin. Microdermabrasion is quite similar but uses a stream of tiny crystals instead of chemicals to get rid of dead cells

  1. Chemical Exfoliation

This is the gentlest method and involves using natural acids (or glycolic, salicylic or lactic acid) to dissolve dead skin cells without removing your natural oils. This will leave you with a smoother complexion in time – especially if used regularly.

Among these three methods, facial scrub is considered to be beginner-friendly and the safest option to add to an existing skincare routine.  All you need to do is to pick a scrub with fine granules and suitable for your skin type, massage it gently into the skin of your face in circular motions without pressing too hard. Work on small sections at a time – half of each cheek, for example. You can use this once or twice a week depending on your tolerance level because it’s unlikely that you will react negatively if used correctly.

The main advantage of using a facial scrub is that they don’t contain any active ingredients as such but are made up mainly of salt crystals or other natural particles which are safe and gentle on the skin so there’s no chance of irritation.

How to choose the right facial scrub

During your search for your first facial scrub, the product claims can get too overwhelming. It’s best to stick to what you know your skin needs. For instance, if you are dealing with dry skin, go for facial scrubs with moisturizing feature, as well. You can easily find this in the list of ingredients, including hyaluronic acid  and oils. If you have oily skin, choose scrubs that are specially formulated for removing excess sebum and preventing breakouts caused by clogged pores.

It pays to use a scrub with ingredients proven to work as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories such as Vitamin A, C, E and beta-carotene. These nutrients will help replenish important vitamins in your skin which ensures rejuvenation of the cells at the dermis level. And also remember that using a facial scrub should be part of an overall skincare regimen – so don’t stop there! Use other products to keep aging process at bay – moisturizers, eye creams, among others.

Finally, it’s best to stick with scrubs derived from natural sources. Not only are they good for your skin, but they are also good for the environment. After washing off the scrubs, they basically gather in the drain. Natural scrubs prevent clogging and polluting water sources.
