How to Make a Facial Scrub: A Simple Guide on How to Make Your Own

If there is one product in our skincare routine that we can easily experiment with DIY style, it would be facial scrubs. If you take a look at the ingredient lists of natural and organic facial scrubs, you’ll find how so many items in the ingredients list can actually be found in your own pantry or backyard. You can make your own facial scrub for your personal use or even try to share it with your friends and enjoy glowing and softer skin together.

Here, we’ll walk you through the easiest way to make your own facial scrub at home.

Step 1: Decide on a base

Your facial scrub will need a base. It can be an oil or any kind of liquid that you are comfortable with. Oils like jojoba, sweet almond, olive oil and castor oils work well as your base or carrier for the scrub. Cooling agents like green tea or rose water percentage point to higher effectiveness when used as a part of your base. If you decided on using oil, try mixing it with water and some other ingredients before adding the cooling agents later in case you do not want to add anything else yet in your ingredients list.

This early part of the step, you can already try to patch test your base to make sure that your skin will not react badly to any oil and base you are using. We highly discourage using essential oils as they can be too potent for your skin, especially your face. Stick with carrier oils to be safe.

Step 2: Your main scrubbing agent

As scrubs are great for exfoliating, we would suggest using an item that is abrasive enough to do the job properly.  There are so many options for the scrub ingredient. The easiest and most accessible would be sugar. However, storage and shelf life might be an issue with this type of scrub, and thus needs to be prepared in small batches. Sugar as the main scrub ingredient could be hard to secure so better stock up if you decide to use it for a long time. You may choose organic sugar while purchasing sugar sources so that you would not have any issues of dealing with chemicals on your skin later on.

Other great scrub sources are salt, coffee grounds, and ground almonds. Salt is easy to find and source, and consistency like that of iodized salt is the best choice. If you are making your coffee at home, you can still extend the usage of those coffee grounds by turning them into your main scrubbing agent. Coffee grounds are filled with anti-oxidants so it’s a win-win for your skin.

Step 2: The right grain size

The purpose of the grain is to exfoliate dead skin cells and remove impurities, and although coarser grain size feels like the more hardworking option, this isn’t always the case when it comes to deep yet gentle cleaning.  A 2-4 mm grain size is fine for most facial scrub users, and you can even use a coffee grinder or other similar tool to achieve this.

Step 3: The right amount of ingredients

As your DIY facial scrub will be made to give you optimal skincare results, you need to make sure that the texture of your final product isn’t too runny or thick. Add the sugar in small amounts while testing the consistency with your finger until you reach the perfect thickness. You can also use an electronic scale if this is more convenient but be sure not to add too much as we do not want any wastage at all because we are making our own DIY products here.

In case your first try with DIY scrub does not work for your face, do not throw it just yet. You can always use if for your body, and enjoy the great results of supple skin all over.
